Description
SUPER RARE 1/6 PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE - POST MORTEM BY FAMOUS DAGUERREIAN WS PORTER IN NICE CASE WITH ORIGINAL HINGE - You are considering a super rare sixth plate taken by one of the legendary early American daguerreian's, Mr. William Southgate Porter. His career spanned the early 1840's to late 1850's working in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and in Cinninnati where this wonderful Post Mortem image was created. The mat is stamped with W.S. Porter and 4th & Vine in Cinninnati. Images by Porter are extremely difficult to find today, in fact this is the very first one I have encountered in my more than dozen years as a collector. The image has some wonderful hand tinting applied to the flowers held by the fallen child. Artfully composed, you will be hard pressed to find a nicer overall memorial portrait of a young boy. The image is perfectly held in a case with a floral urn pattern pressed into both side of the leather housing and still retains the original hinge. I wish all my clientele good luck in winning this Post Mortem sixth plate by a legendary operator. CONDITION : Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The sixth plate has been resealed with P90 archival tape and fitted with a new sheet of glass. The sixth plate has superb contrast, beautiful tonal range, excellent selective sharpness and wonderful hand tinting. The plate has two small areas where the plate has exfoliated; one by the flowers & the other at 6 o'clock on the bed. The case as I mentioned above retains the original hinge, a golden velvet pillow and the single working latch system. Overall, a rare and spectacular Post Mortem a noted artist in photography history. I will ship this item to the winning bidder carefully packaged by Priority Mail.
